516 Arouca Bridge

At 516 metres long and 175 metres above the river, this suspension bridge across the Paiva gorge is one of the most dramatic pedestrian structures in Europe. The floor is steel mesh, which means you can see the river directly below at every step. Most people slow to a shuffle near the middle; a few freeze entirely. It is genuinely vertiginous, and genuinely spectacular.

The bridge connects two sides of the gorge at the end of the Passadiços do Paiva trail. A ticket (around €12–15) covers a one-way crossing, though many visitors walk the Paiva trail first and use the bridge as their finish line. Booking ahead is strongly recommended in summer and at weekends — the bridge has a maximum capacity and the queues can be long. The access road and car park fill early on peak days; arriving before 9am avoids most of the crowds.

A story
When it opened in May 2021, the 516 Arouca was the world's longest pedestrian suspension bridge, beating the previous record-holder — also in Portugal — by nearly 100 metres. The record has since been taken by a bridge in Slovakia, but that barely matters when you're standing on the mesh floor looking straight down 175 metres to the Paiva River.
