Things to Do

Arouca's two headline attractions are both world-class and genuinely thrilling: a 516-metre suspension bridge hanging 175 metres above the Paiva gorge, and an 8.7-kilometre riverside trail through one of Portugal's most beautiful valleys. Either one alone justifies the drive from Porto. Together, they make for one of the best active day trips in northern Portugal.

Beyond the adrenaline, there's the geopark — one of only a handful of UNESCO-designated geoparks in Portugal, with trilobite fossils so large they look like props from a science fiction film. The monastery in the town centre adds a third layer: a Cistercian foundation with baroque art and a royal tomb that most visitors walk straight past.
