The Maranhão Reservoir spreads below Avis in a long sheet of calm water edged by cork oaks, olive trees, pasture, and low hills. It was created by the Maranhão dam, but it now gives the town its easiest outdoor escape.
Come for a walk, a bike ride, canoeing, or a lazy hour by the water. The contrast with the fortified hill town above is what makes it worthwhile.
