Avis

Whitewashed Alentejo town tied to the medieval Order of Avis and the Maranhão reservoir.

Avis is a small hill town in the Alto Alentejo, quiet enough that it would be easy to pass by without realising how much history is packed into the walls. The old town was the seat of the Military Order of Avis, whose name later passed to Portugal's second royal dynasty, and the remaining castle towers still frame the upper streets.

The centre is made for slow wandering: whitewashed houses, narrow lanes, fragments of fortification, and the former convent of São Bento, now home to the Centro Interpretativo da Ordem de Avis and Museu do Campo Alentejano. Together they explain why this little place mattered beyond its size.

Just below town, the Maranhão Reservoir changes the mood completely, with calm water, cork oaks, olive trees, and space for walking, cycling, canoeing, or doing very little. Avis is not a headline stop, but it is a good Alentejo detour if you like small towns with a clear story.
