This interpretive centre occupies part of the former Convent of São Bento de Avis and gives the town's history some needed structure. The focus is the Military Order of Saint Benedict of Avis: frontier monks, landholding, royal links, and the way a small Alentejo town became attached to a major Portuguese dynasty.
It is a compact museum, best visited before walking the castle walls and convent area.
