Fountain of the Idol

One of the strangest survivals from Roman Bracara Augusta, the Fountain of the Idol is a carved rock face set into the corner of a modern building on Rua do Raio — easy to miss if you do not know to look for it. The carving, probably from the first century AD, depicts a local deity, and the Latin inscription below it records a dedication. A small channel carved into the rock once directed a spring into the public space.

The setting is deliberately awkward: the modern building was constructed around and over the ancient carving rather than demolishing it, leaving the Roman monument sandwiched into the contemporary streetscape. It is a minor sight but an oddly affecting one — two thousand years of continuous city life in one cramped corner.
