The "Mouth of Hell" is a sea cave carved into the cliff face about 2 kilometres west of the town centre. When the Atlantic swell is up, waves drive into the cave with a deep boom and spray shoots upward through a hole in the roof. On calmer days it is less dramatic but still a striking piece of coastline. The walk along the clifftop from town is pleasant in its own right. There is a small market of craft stalls near the viewing area.

A story
In September 1930 the British occultist Aleister Crowley faked his own death here, leaving a cigarette case and a melodramatic suicide note on the cliff with the help of the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa. The hoax was widely reported in European newspapers — until Crowley turned up unharmed at a Berlin gallery opening three weeks later.
