Favaios

Hilltop village famous for its sweet Moscatel wine and four-cornered bread.

Favaios is a stone village on the plateau above the upper Douro, about ten kilometres uphill from Pinhão. It is a worthwhile detour for two reasons: the local Moscatel, a sweet aromatic dessert wine very different from port; and the village atmosphere, which feels much older and quieter than the better-known villages on the river.

The Museu do Pão e do Vinho, occupying a converted bakery and small winery, is the best place to taste the local Moscatel alongside the famous four-cornered bread. It is also a useful turnaround point for drivers exploring the small back roads that thread through the upper-valley vineyards.

A story
Favaios produces one of only two officially recognised Portuguese Moscatel wines, made from Moscatel Galego grapes grown on the high plateau above the Douro. The village is also known for pão de quatro cantos — a distinctive square loaf with four sharp corners — and a small museum, the Museu do Pão e do Vinho, celebrates both.
