Lamego

Old episcopal town on the south side of the valley with a striking hilltop sanctuary.

Lamego is a small bishopric town about ten kilometres south of Régua, on the higher ground above the Douro. It has been important since the Visigothic period — there has been a cathedral here since the 12th century — and the old town below the castle hill is pleasant for an hour's wander among narrow streets, granite houses and small squares.

The reason most visitors come is the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, the twin-towered white church at the top of a monumental Baroque staircase. The town also produces a decent sparkling wine — Raposeira — which is unusual for a region better known for fortified reds.
