Pico do Castelo is one of the island's best viewpoints, rising above the north side of Porto Santo. The walk is not long, but the reward is a broad view back over Vila Baleira, the long beach, the dry interior, and the small offshore islets.
It is a good counterweight to beach time. From up here the island's shape becomes clear: one sandy south coast, a small inhabited centre, and a scatter of volcanic hills that make Porto Santo feel much larger than it looks from sea level.
