Fonte de São João

The Fountain of São João is a decorative 18th-century public fountain near the castle in Melgaço, classified as a Portuguese national monument. The carved stonework is in good condition and the fountain still flows. It is one of several historic stone fountains in the Minho region that remain in public use.

A minor sight in isolation, it is worth a look in passing when visiting the castle. The immediate neighbourhood around the fountain — a small square with granite paving and a scatter of old houses — is one of the most atmospheric corners of the old town.
