A restored worker's cottage turned local museum, the Casa do Mineiro gives you a sense of what daily life looked like for the thousands of Portuguese and Alentejo workers who lived here under British management. The rooms are set up as they would have been in the early 20th century — simple furniture, a kitchen range, family photographs — and display panels cover the mine's history from Roman times through to its closure in 1966.
The museum is small and manageable in under an hour. It is worth combining with a wander through the abandoned streets of the British quarter, where the old cinema, the company headquarters, and the English-style houses still stand in various states of decay. A melancholy and fascinating place.
