Formal gardens spread along a ridge west of the old town, with peacocks strutting through the hedges and one of the best river panoramas in the city from the southern terrace. The glass pavilion at the centre — the 'Palácio de Cristal' — is actually a 1950s concrete dome; the original 19th-century crystal palace was demolished. Bring a camera.
