Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição

The Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in the centre of Portimão, dates from the fifteenth century though it has been substantially altered and restored over the centuries. The interior is notable for its azulejo tile panels — the blue-and-white decorative tiles that are one of the most distinctive features of Portuguese sacred architecture.

The tiles in this church depict scenes from the life of the Virgin and episodes from local history. They are not the most celebrated examples of azulejo work in Portugal, but they are genuine, well-preserved, and free to view during opening hours. The church also has a small Manueline doorway — a remnant of the original late-Gothic building — on the north side.
