Bairro Sul — also called Lapa after its church — is the old fishing quarter on the south side of the seaport. The streets are narrow, the houses simple and whitewashed, and the small chapels and shrines along the way are a reminder of how recently this was a settlement built entirely around the sea.
It is the most atmospheric part of town, especially in late afternoon when the day's catch is being unloaded. Some of the best small seafood restaurants in Póvoa are tucked into these streets.
