Santarém's old town is compact and best explored on foot. The churches are the main draw — the city has an extraordinary density of Gothic architecture for a town of its size. The Portas do Sol garden offers the best views over the Tagus plain. Allow a half-day to walk the old town thoroughly; two days if you want to see everything at a relaxed pace and visit the agricultural fair.
