Capela de Nossa Senhora das Vitórias

Small neo-Gothic funerary chapel on the south shore of Lagoa das Furnas

The Capela de Nossa Senhora das Vitórias is a small neo-Gothic chapel on the south-western shore of Lagoa das Furnas, built between 1862 and 1886 by the wealthy land-owner José do Canto in memory of his wife Maria Guilhermina Brickwood, who died young. The chapel is the centrepiece of the formal mata-jardim — woodland garden — that the same man laid out around the lake, planting thousands of trees imported from around the world.

The chapel is usually closed but you can walk freely around the exterior, which is the more interesting part: rust-brown trachyte stone, tall pointed windows, a slender tower, and a tomb in the crypt for the founder and his wife. Combine with a walk on the lakeshore path and the nearby fumarole field.
