The Beira-Rio Market occupies a handsome iron-and-glass structure on the Gaia waterfront, a short walk from the Ponte Dom Luís I. Originally built in the early twentieth century and restored in recent years, the market hall is one of the more attractive public buildings on the Gaia side of the river — the kind of structure that is now more valued than when it was built.
The market sells fresh produce, fish, and local products. It is a working market aimed primarily at local residents rather than tourists, which makes it a refreshing contrast to the tourist-facing port lodges and riverside restaurants. Come in the morning for the fish and vegetable stalls, when the vendors are still fully stocked and the atmosphere is lively. The surrounding streets have some of the more characterful older architecture in the Gaia waterfront area.
A good stop before or after a port lodge tour.
