Taylor's is widely regarded as one of the finest port wine houses on the Gaia riverfront, and its lodge on the upper hillside — accessible via a steep walk from the waterfront promenade — delivers one of the most thorough and generous visitor experiences among the major lodges. The tour takes you through the ageing cellars, past barrels stacked four high in the cool stone rooms, and provides a clear explanation of how port is made, aged, and classified.
The tasting at the end is the real draw: Taylor's offers a selection of their portfolio, typically including a young ruby, a ten-year tawny, and a twenty-year tawny. The older tawnies are the house speciality, with a nuttiness and complexity that comes from decades of gradual oxidation in small casks. The terrace bar has one of the best views in Gaia and sells tastings by the glass without a tour.
Booking in advance is recommended in summer. Taylor's also operates the Yeatman Hotel adjacent to the lodge — its rooftop pool and restaurant are open to non-guests for a drink, and the view from there is exceptional.
