Sugălete (Merchants' Arcade)

Vaulted Renaissance arcade of 13 merchant houses

The Sugălete is a long terrace of thirteen connected merchant houses on the north side of the main square, with a continuous Renaissance arcade in front. The buildings went up in the 15th and 16th centuries as the workshops and shops of the Saxon guilds; the vaulted arcade still shelters small cafes and antique sellers today.

This is the most photographed corner of Bistrița and a good place to sit with a coffee and watch the town. The buildings vary in height and roof pitch, giving the terrace a pleasantly uneven, hand-built look.
