The Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Demetrius is a Romanian Orthodox church near the old centre. The present building dates from the 20th century, but it stands on the site of a much older church, giving the place more weight than its relatively recent construction date suggests.
It is worth a short stop if you are walking between the central museums and the older streets south of the square. The striped exterior and quiet interior offer a change of pace from Craiova's civic buildings.
