Csíki Sör Brewery

Two breweries share the name of the town. The original Ciuc beer, owned by Heineken Romania, is a mass-market lager produced at the large industrial brewery on the south edge of town. The smaller Csíki Sör (Csík Beer) is an artisanal microbrewery founded in 2003, brewing unfiltered lagers and dark beers using local barley and Harghita spring water. Their flagship Csíki Sör Premium is the more interesting of the two products and is sold across Székely Land.

The Csíki Sör brewery in Sânsimion (about 20 kilometres south of town) offers tours by prior arrangement, including a tasting and a stop at the small visitor centre. In town, several pubs around Piața Libertății pour Csíki Sör on tap as a local point of pride. Worth a stop if you are passing.

A story
Csíki Sör — Ciuc Beer — was founded in 2003 in protest at the dominant industrial Romanian lager Ciuc, brewed by Heineken in Miercurea Ciuc since the early 2000s. The artisanal Csíki Sör styles itself the 'authentic' local beer and has built a cult following among Székelys. The two products coexist in town in a permanent low-grade marketing feud.
