The central Piața Libertății (Liberty Square; Szabadság tér in Hungarian) is the social heart of Miercurea Ciuc. The square is anchored by the modernist Town Hall to the east and the Civic Centre buildings to the south — Communist-era construction that swept away much of the older town centre but left a wide pleasant plaza with fountains, benches, and a colourful weekend market.
The cafes along the eastern side of the square are good for an afternoon coffee; the small bookshops carry Hungarian and Romanian titles. The square is at its liveliest in summer when concerts and craft markets fill it in the evenings, and at its strangest in winter when temperatures regularly drop below minus 15 and the fountains freeze hard.
