Church of Saint John the Baptist

The finest surviving 15th-century Moldavian church in the city centre

Address Str. Ștefan cel Mare, Piatra Neamț

The Church of Saint John the Baptist, part of the Princely Court complex, is the most important medieval building in Piatra Neamț. Built by Ștefan cel Mare between 1497 and 1498, it exemplifies the Moldavian ecclesiastical style at its mature peak: a triconch plan (three-apsed) with Gothic decorative detailing on the portal and windows, sitting under a distinctive profile of drum and roof that would influence church construction in the region for a century.

The exterior stonework is delicately carved, and the pronaos (vestibule) contains original painted decoration. The church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Moldavian Churches nomination. Services are still held here, giving it an active rather than merely historical character.
