The Halele Centrale is the covered central market of Ploiești and the best place in the city to get a sense of daily Romanian life. The market hall dates from the late 19th century and operates as a proper working market — not a tourist attraction — selling local cheeses, smoked meats, fresh vegetables, pickles, and seasonal produce from the Prahova Valley.
The cheese stalls are particularly worth exploring: Romanian telemea (a brined white cheese similar to feta), cascaval (a yellow firm cheese), and smoked varieties from the mountain villages to the north are all available at prices that will seem absurd to anyone arriving from Western Europe. The market is busiest on Saturday mornings. It sits near the city centre and is an easy walk from the main museums.
