Prahova County Art Museum

The Prahova County Art Museum occupies a dignified building on Independenței Boulevard and holds a solid collection of Romanian paintings and sculpture from the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection spans academic realism, symbolism, and modernist work, with particular strength in landscape painting of the Prahova Valley — the mountains visible from Ploiești inspired generations of Romanian artists who came to paint them.

The museum also holds a selection of European applied arts and occasional temporary exhibitions of contemporary work. It is a conventional regional art museum, but a good one, and the permanent collection gives useful context for the cultural history of Wallachia. The building has recently been renovated and the presentation is considerably better than it was a decade ago.

A story
The museum is named after Ion Ionescu-Quintus, a local painter who lived to 107 — the oldest Romanian artist on record — and donated a substantial part of his life's work to the city. He was still painting in his hundredth year.
