Fabric

Fabric is the old industrial suburb east of Cetate — the district where the silk, beer, soap and textile factories of 19th-century Timisoara lined the banks of the Bega Canal. The name simply means "factory" in Romanian and most of the original industrial buildings still stand, many converted to other uses.

Walking Fabric is a different experience from the polished centre. The architecture is later — mostly late-19th and early-20th-century Eclectic and Secession — and the streets are wider and less ordered. The Fabric Synagogue, the public-transport museum, the brewery, the old water tower and several Eclectic palaces are all here. Trajan Square (Piata Traian) is the district's central square, with cafes and a Sunday flea market.
