Church of the Holy Archangels

Romanian Orthodox church on Piața Victoriei, notable for its frescoes and traditional Oltenian style

The Church of the Holy Archangels (Sfinții Voievozi) stands on Piața Victoriei in the centre of Târgu Jiu, a traditional Romanian Orthodox church with an interior covered in frescoes. The church dates from the nineteenth century and follows the Oltenian church-building tradition — a tall, narrow nave under a high drum, with exterior painted decoration.

The church is a short walk from both the Gorj County Museum and the central section of the Brâncuși ensemble. It is open for services and generally accessible to visitors during daylight hours. The interior frescoes, though not in the same class as the great medieval monasteries of Oltenia, are good examples of the later Romanian tradition.
