Tismana Monastery sits in wooded hills west of Târgu Jiu, where the road begins to feel more like a mountain approach than a town excursion. Founded in the late 14th century and rebuilt more than once, it is one of Wallachia's important monastic sites, with thick walls, painted interiors, and a position that feels deliberately withdrawn from the lowlands.
It works well as a half-day trip if you have already seen Brâncuși's sculptural ensemble in Târgu Jiu and want a different side of Gorj County. The monastery is active, so dress and behave accordingly. The best part is the combination of architecture and setting: stone, forest, bells, and the sense that the valley closes around the complex.
