Tulcea's riverfront promenade — Faleza Dunării — runs for a mile or so along the south bank of the Danube, from the passenger port at one end to the cargo docks at the other. It is the most-used public space in the city: schoolchildren, fishermen, pensioners on benches, the occasional river cruiser tied up at a pontoon. By night it is gently lit and lined with bars and gelaterias.
For travellers the practical reason to come here is the passenger boat station, the launch point for all public and private boats into the Danube Delta. Even without a boat planned, the views across the wide brown river to the green flatlands of the delta beyond are the city's defining outlook.
