Tulcea

Danube port city and practical gateway to the pelicans, reed islands, and villages of the delta.

Tulcea is the gateway to the Danube Delta, Europe's largest wetland and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The city itself is functional rather than beautiful — a mid-sized Romanian port on the right bank of the Danube — but almost everyone who visits the delta passes through here.

Boats to the delta's channels and villages leave from Tulcea's river station. You can arrange day trips or multi-day excursions to see pelican colonies, floating reed islands, and fishing villages like Sulina and Sfântu Gheorghe. The Danube Delta Museum in town gives useful context on the ecosystem before you head out.

Tulcea is about five hours by car or train from Bucharest. The best time to visit is May through September, when the birdlife is at its peak and the weather makes boat trips pleasant.

Day Trips

Almost everyone who comes to Tulcea is here for the Danube Delta. Multi-day liveaboard cruises and single-day excursions both leave from the city's river station, winding through reed forests, water-lily lakes, and pelican-rich side-channels. Beyond the delta, the early-Christian monasteries at Cocoș, Saon and Celic-Dere lie a half-hour drive west; the Roman fortress ruins of Enisala overlook lake Razim a similar distance south.

Getting There

Tulcea is about 270 km from Bucharest — four to five hours by car or train. The Cape Tulcea airport, 15 km south of the city, has limited charter and seasonal flights but most travellers fly into Bucharest's Otopeni and continue by road. Long-distance buses (autocare) connect Tulcea to Constanța and Bucharest several times a day from the autogară near the river station.

Things to Do

Tulcea's role is to be the launching pad for the Danube Delta — boats leave from the river station for the channels, pelican colonies and remote fishing villages. The town itself adds the excellent Danube Delta Museum, the hilltop Independence Monument, a 19th-century Ottoman mosque, and the cathedral on the riverfront.
