Azizyie Mosque

19th-century Ottoman mosque, a relic of multicultural Dobruja

The Azizyie Mosque was built in 1863 under the late Ottoman rule of Dobruja, named after Sultan Abdülaziz. It is a modest, square-plan stone building with a single slender minaret — far from the grand imperial mosques of Istanbul, but a reminder that Tulcea was a multicultural Ottoman port for centuries before it became Romanian.

The mosque still serves a small congregation of local Turkish and Tatar Muslims and is open to respectful visitors outside prayer times. Inside, the prayer hall is plain and bright, with a wooden minbar and a chandelier hanging from the painted dome. There is no museum-style interpretation; the building speaks for itself.
