Horezu Pottery Workshops

The town of Horezu, a few kilometres from the monastery of the same name, is the centre of a living pottery tradition that dates back at least three centuries and was inscribed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage in 2012. Workshops along the main street and in houses on the surrounding lanes sell pieces directly to visitors: plates, jugs, cups, and decorative tiles in the distinctive bold geometric patterns.

Several masters welcome visitors to watch them work, and a few offer short throwing or painting sessions. Prices are reasonable compared to what similar work sells for elsewhere. The annual Cocoșul de Hurezu pottery fair, held in June, brings together potters from across the region and is the best time to see the full range of styles.

A story
The Horezu style — concentric circles, spirals, and stylised roosters in brown, blue, and terracotta on a cream ground — has been made by the same families in the same way for generations. UNESCO added it to the Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2012. The motifs have specific local meanings: the rooster represents the sun, the spiral represents continuity, the wave represents water and life. Each master potter has a distinctive signature motif that identifies their work.
