Vâlcea county's main draw is the string of Orthodox monasteries along the Olt Valley — painted churches, walled fortresses of faith, and Baroque ecclesiastical buildings that have stood here since the medieval period. The UNESCO-listed Horezu Monastery is the undisputed highlight, but the valley rewards a slow drive with stops at half a dozen other foundations. The Carpathian foothills also offer hiking, spa towns, and dramatic gorge scenery.
