Vatra Dornei Casino

The Vatra Dornei Casino is the grandest building in town — a 19th-century ornamental structure with towers, balconies, and decorative ironwork that looks like it was lifted from a Mitteleuropean spa resort of the Belle Époque. It stands in the main park near the mineral springs, surrounded by old trees and gardens.

The building's exterior is the main attraction; the interior has been used variously as a cultural centre and events space. It is not always open to visitors, but the park around it is pleasant to walk through at any time, especially in summer when the gardens are in bloom. The contrast between the faded Habsburg grandeur of the casino and the backdrop of the Eastern Carpathians is one of the more quietly striking scenes in Romania.

A story
The casino was built in 1897 in an ornate neo-baroque style to serve the wealthy Habsburg-era tourists who came to take the mineral waters. After Romania's communist government nationalised gambling in 1948, it was converted into a cultural centre and ballroom. Today it has been restored and is the architectural centrepiece of the spa park, though it no longer functions as a casino.
