Alexandrov Kremlin

Fortified former royal residence where Ivan the Terrible held court in the 16th century.

The Alexandrov Kremlin, also called the Alexandrov Sloboda, is the city's essential sight. Ivan the Terrible moved his court here in the 1560s, and for a time this walled compound functioned as Russia's political centre. The present white walls are later, but the place still has the closed, monastic feel of an old fortified residence.

Inside are several churches and museum exhibitions. The Trinity Cathedral, Church of the Intercession, and Crucifixion bell tower are the strongest pieces, and together they explain why Alexandrov matters far beyond its present size.
