Alexandrov

Old Russian town northeast of Moscow, centred on Ivan the Terrible's former royal sloboda.

Alexandrov is a small city northeast of Moscow, on the edge of the Golden Ring country. Its quiet streets would not suggest a former seat of power, but in the 16th century Ivan the Terrible ruled from the Alexandrov Sloboda for years, turning this fortified residence into one of the most important places in Russia.

The Alexandrov Kremlin is the reason to come. Inside its white walls are churches, museum rooms, and fragments of court architecture from the time when the tsar's household, treasury, and political terror all operated from here. The rest of town is modest, with a few merchant houses, churches, and small museums that reward slow wandering.

Alexandrov is close enough to Moscow and Sergiev Posad for a day trip, but it feels less rehearsed than the better-known Golden Ring stops. That makes it a good choice if you want Russian history without the tour-bus polish.
