The Altai State Museum of Local Lore is one of the oldest museums in the region, founded in the 19th century and still focused on the natural history, archaeology, mining, and peoples of Altai. It is the best indoor stop before heading from Barnaul toward the mountains.
The displays are old-fashioned in places, but the collection gives useful context for why this otherwise plain Siberian city mattered.
