Europe > Russia > Barnaul
Barnaul is the capital of Altai Krai, spread along the Ob River at the point where the Siberian plain begins to feel the pull of the Altai Mountains. It is a working regional city rather than a showpiece, but its old core still carries the story of a place built on 18th-century copper and silver smelting.
The best walk starts around Demidov Square, where the mining school, old hospital, and Demidov Column recall the factories that made Barnaul important to the Russian Empire. Nearby, the restored Mountain Pharmacy turns an early medical supply house into a small museum and Siberian restaurant, while the Altai State Museum of Local Lore gives the wider Altai context.
Barnaul's rough edges are part of the bargain. Soviet blocks and traffic sit close to merchant houses, Orthodox churches, and steep river views from Nagorny Park. It is a good spare-day stop if you are crossing southern Siberia or beginning an Altai trip, especially if you like cities whose history is still visible in ordinary streets.
