Chuvashia is a small republic on the middle Volga, wedged between Mari El and Tatarstan. The Chuvash people are Turkic in origin but Orthodox Christian, giving the region a cultural character distinct from its neighbours. The landscape is gentle — rolling farmland, birch forests, and a long stretch of Volga riverbank.
Most visitors pass through Cheboksary, the capital, which sits on a wide bay of the Volga and has a pleasant waterfront and a handful of museums dedicated to Chuvash culture and language.
