Peter the Great visited Derbent in 1722 as part of his Persian Campaign, a military push southward along the Caspian coast intended to extend Russian power into the region. The small wooden cabin where he lodged during his stay has been preserved as a historical monument near the Caspian shore.
The cabin itself is extremely modest — a reminder that even the most grandiose military campaigns involved nights in simple accommodation. The interest is historical: this is where one of Russia's most transformative rulers reached his southernmost point, and where Russia briefly became a Caspian power. The monument is small and easy to miss without knowing to look for it, but worth combining with a walk along the seafront north of the old town.
