The tree-lined embankment along the Angara River is the city's favourite promenade. Historic churches and 19th-century administrative buildings face the water, and the view across to the far bank — especially at dusk — captures something essential about Siberian city life. The embankment runs past the Znamensky Convent, a working monastery whose turquoise baroque belfry is one of Irkutsk's most recognisable landmarks.
