Slovene Springs

Cold limestone springs flowing below the fortress toward Gorodishchenskoye Lake

The Slovene Springs emerge from the slope below the fortress in several clear streams and run down toward Gorodishchenskoye Lake. The setting is simple but memorable: wooden walkways, wet stone, reeds, and the fortress walls high above.

Bring a bottle if you want to taste the water, though common sense applies after heavy rain. The springs are best visited on the walk between the fortress and Truvorovo Gorodishche, when the change from stone ramparts to damp valley floor gives the landscape some depth.

A story
The springs are sometimes called the Springs of the Twelve Apostles, and local tradition treats their waters as healing. The first written references are usually traced to early Russian geographical descriptions, where Izborsk is identified by these springs as much as by its walls.
