Petrozavodsk is most interesting as a base for exploring the surrounding Karelian landscape, but the city itself has more to offer than most visitors expect. The lakeside promenade, the National Museum, and the sculpture park along the waterfront are the main in-town attractions; Kizhi Island is the unmissable day trip.
