Krasnodar Stadium

The Krasnodar Stadium is one of the most architecturally impressive football grounds in Russia — a 35,000-seat arena with a distinctive bowl shape, a natural grass pitch lit by a retractable roof system, and standards of finish that compare favourably with top European venues. It opened in 2016 as the home of FC Krasnodar, a club founded by the same billionaire in 2008.

Adjacent to the stadium is the Krasnodar FC Park, a free public botanical garden laid out by the club with labelled plantings, walking paths, and an amphitheatre. The park is open to all and is one of the better public green spaces in the city. Tours of the stadium interior are available on non-match days; the combination of stadium tour and a walk through the park makes a worthwhile half-day for anyone interested in contemporary architecture or football culture.

A story
The Krasnodar Stadium was funded entirely by Sergei Galitsky, the billionaire founder of the Magnit supermarket chain, who built it as a personal gift to the city. The stadium cost an estimated 350 million euros and was completed in 2016. Galitsky grew up in Krasnodar supporting the local team, and his founding of FC Krasnodar and construction of its ground is one of the more unusual examples in European football of a club built from scratch by a single benefactor in their hometown.
