Cat Semyon Statue

Bronze cat with a knotted handkerchief — Murmansk's most-loved monument

A small bronze sculpture on a low plinth at the edge of Lake Semyonovskoye depicts a sitting cat with a knotted handkerchief slung over one shoulder, like a traveller's bundle. He is Semyon, the wandering cat — the most photographed monument in Murmansk after Alyosha.

Locals come to rub Semyon's paw for luck, and the bronze there is polished bright by years of use. Wedding couples almost always include a stop at the statue. Children leave him small offerings: bits of fish, milk, and once (according to an attendant) a tinned sardine on a paper plate.

A story
The real Semyon belonged to a Murmansk family on holiday in Moscow in 1987. He disappeared from their car during the journey home — and six and a half years later turned up emaciated at their apartment door, having apparently walked back over 2,000 kilometres. The story was widely covered in the Soviet press, and the cat became a local legend.
