Five Corners Square

Murmansk's central square, named for the five streets that meet here

Five Corners (Pyat Uglov) is the heart of downtown Murmansk, an open paved square where five major streets converge: Lenin Prospekt, Kommuny, Vorovskogo, Profsoyuzov, and Komsomolskaya. It is dominated on one side by the slab-like Azimut Hotel — at twenty storeys, one of the tallest buildings north of the Arctic Circle — and lined with shops, cafés, and the city's main post office.

In winter the square is decorated with elaborate ice sculptures and a large Christmas tree that stays lit through the polar night. In summer it is the natural meeting point for evening strolls, when the sun barely sets.
