Lake Semyonovskoye

City park around a small lake, with the Cat Semyon statue and an oceanarium

A small natural lake on the northern edge of the city, Semyonovskoye is the closest thing Murmansk has to a city park. The surrounding grounds include the Oceanarium (the only one in the world inside the Arctic Circle, with performing seals), several playgrounds, a fairground, and a much-loved statue of a sailor's cat named Semyon — said to commemorate a real cat that walked home to Murmansk from Moscow.

It is a popular family spot on summer weekends. In winter the lake freezes solid and locals come out to ice-skate, ice-fish, and toboggan down the surrounding slopes.
