Nizhny Novgorod has its own international airport (Strigino, code GOJ) about 15 kilometres southwest of the centre. There are regular flights from Moscow (roughly 1 hour) and other Russian cities. The airport is connected to the city by bus and taxi.
By rail, Nizhny Novgorod is about 4 hours from Moscow on the express trains (Sapsan and Lastochka) that run multiple times daily. The train station is in the lower town near the Oka river. Trains also run from St. Petersburg, Kazan, and other Volga cities. From Moscow, taking the high-speed rail is more practical than flying when you factor in the city-centre-to-city-centre journey time.
By road, the M7 highway from Moscow is the main approach. The city is also a stop on the Volga river cruise routes that run between Moscow and Astrakhan in the summer months.
