Kremlin

15th-century fortress housing Russia's oldest cathedral.

The Novgorod Kremlin (known locally as the Detinets) is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Russia. The current red-brick walls were built in the 15th century, replacing earlier earthwork and wooden defenses that had stood here since the 9th century. The Kremlin is the heart of the city and contains most of Novgorod's major monuments within a single compact area.

Inside the walls you will find the Cathedral of St Sophia (the oldest church in Russia, built 1045–1050), the Millennium of Russia monument, the Chamber of Facets (a fine Gothic hall from the 15th century), and the Museum of History, Architecture and Art with its renowned collection of Novgorod School icons. The riverside walk along the Kremlin's western wall is one of the most pleasant in the city. Entry to the Kremlin grounds is free; individual museums and the cathedral have their own admission fees.
